Is this scary or what?!
A fire at the Buncefield oil depot, 25 miles north of London in the early hours of Sunday morning, has been described as the largest fire Britain and Europe has seen since World War II. More than 40 people were injured in the blast, with most of them suffering from cuts and bruises caused by flying glass. Approximately 2,000 residents of the area were also evacuated from their homes on Sunday, but some were being allowed back on Wednesday. Firefighters fought the enormous blaze for over 30 hours before being forced to move back on Monday afternoon. Flames had reignited in one tank, causing an increased threat of explosion. A black cloud covered the sky over London and by Tuesday the smoke had reached as far as Spain and France. People's health is a major concern as fumes continue to spew over the city. Initial thoughts were that this was a terrorist attack, especially as it came four days after a threat issued by al-Qaida that called for attacks on oil facilities. The oil depot is the main carrier of jet fuel for Heathrow and Gatwick Airports and also stores gasoline, kerosene and diesel. The blaze caused concerns regarding fuel supply in the oil market.
Pretty scary, huh?
